DID WE MAKE YOUR MOMMA PROUD
Twenty years …..
That’s how long she’s been gone.
Man, It’s so hard to believe
that it’s been anywhere near that long.
I wonder what she would say,
if we could talk to her now?
Would she say, I wonder,
guys you’ve all made me proud?
Have I lived my life
to honor her memory?
Or, have I selfishly lived
just to satisfy me?
Have I honored the promise’s,
which she asked me to keep?
Does she know I still think about her,
or that sometimes, I still weep?
Would she approve of the way
I’ve gone on with my life?
Would she be happy, or sad,
that I haven’t taken a wife?
Would it be easier for her
if she knew I still miss her?
In my dreams she’s still so real,
sometimes it seems I could kiss her.
Have I been a good influence
on her children and mine?
Would we have done a better job,
if she hadn’t run out of time?
She’s missed more than half
of the lives of her son’s.
She never met your daughters,
or your chosen ones.
Would she be proud of the lives
that the three of us lead?
Or, would she be thinking
we’re not quite up to speed?
I made her a promise
that I’ve kept ever since,
though I often have wondered,
did I misunderstand what she meant?
Was she thinking of her dad
and the lady in his life?
Was she trying to warn me
about the dangers of a wife?
Would she be proud
of the paths our lives have taken,
or would she think, somehow
we’re all sadly mistaken?
Would she be proud of the choices
that you boys have made?
Would she be as proud as me
that you both have a trade?
I know she‘d be proud
of those daughters you’ve born,
yet I still have some questions,
I still feel a bit torn.
Have we honored her memory?
Have we done her proud?
Shouldn’t we have done more for Granny?
Are we still under a cloud?
Life has gone on
without her, it seems,
but still I have questions
about what it all means.
I’m proud of you guys.
I think we’ve all stood up to the test.
But, sometimes I still wonder,
have we done our absolute best?
