MY FRIEND PAT
She responded to one of my poems,
a line I considered one of her best.
“dancin' in the rain...swingin' in the wind…
and eatin' buttercups for breakfast.”
Then she issued a challenge.
“Turn that line into a poem.”
Which of us could more quickly
give those words a brand new home?
In responding to this challenge
how could I not give my all?
Though my time was clearly spoken for,
to my keyboard I did fall.
She usually writes magical stuff,
much more profound than mine.
I usually write about normal things
that just pop into my mind.
Now I was having visions
of “dancin’ in the rain”
And, eating buttercups
wonderin’ if they’d bring me pain.
I mulled that over for a while
thinking about her request,
then I jotted down these words,
knowing they’re far from my very best.

i love reading about your wonderful 'normal' things...they just don't seem to pop into my mind long enough for me to slam them onto paper...my head seems destined to drift to more palateable things...only briefly facing the real word...in small doses. watch for my 'last' place offering of 'buttercups'
