Why Do I Write

Tom Hyland recently posted a little gem about all the things he’s written and the nearly ¾ of a million “hits” he has received as a result. It seemed he was asking, “Why do I write?” It prompted me to peal back the layers and try to ascertain my answer to that same question.

WHY DO I WRITE???

I write because I enjoy it
and it helps to pass the time.
I don’t have that much to say,
but it relieves my cloudy mind.

It started when I was lonely
after my wife had died,
often I wrote to her,
it helped me, when I cried.

My heart was imprisoned in pain,
I was seeking a way to free it.
At first it was pretty dreadful stuff,
fortunately no one would ever see it.

I wrote just for myself
never intending it to be shared,
but in time I began to heal,
then discovered that I still cared.

After the hurt subsided
at times I still would write,
though the subject matter changed
as I began to see the light.

The world still revolved,
it no longer hurt to smile.
Some of my poems showed promise,
if only once in a while.

Over twenty years now have passed,
my poems may have gotten better,
still I write them mostly for me
it’s like writing myself a letter.

I write because it’s my passion,
but I don’t consider myself a poet.
My poems are amateurish
and I’m the first to say I know it.

I sometimes re-write the originals
when I’ve had new inspiration.
Occasionally just fine tuning
will heighten my appreciation.

I’ve put them into books
so they would be preserved
to leave them for my Grand girls,
though it’s far less than they deserve.

My poems often tell a story
about my younger days
and parts of their daddy’s story,
so they’ll know more about our ways.

I know my son gets embarrassed
by some of the things I write,
but if he’d take the time to read em,
they just might shed a little light.

I understand the mushy stuff
likely isn’t up to his speed
that’s why I put them into chapters
to allow a choice of what to read.

When my days on earth are over
and at last they dig my grave.
I hope my words will be like pictures,
he’ll find worthy enough to save.

Richard,
This is worth saving in my library. In fact, I may issue this a challenge for everyone to tell us in a poem why do they write. This is outstanding work.

Many blessings,
~Linda

I think we all have our own reasons for writing, some start very early in life, some really late and some do chose writing as a career. Myself I always played with writing but only had my first book published when I was fifty or so, my family had laughed when I told them I was writing a book but I went ahead anyway and when my publisher held the book launch they were all there saying they knew I could do it. LOL < and yes where I grew up if you said you wrote poetry you were almost certainly prepared to get beaten up. Keep on writing my friend.

You pretty much said it for all of us. You wrote to keep from allowing the pain of your wife's death to overwhelm you. I wrote in order to free the many demons I had hidden inside myself. Thanks to poetry I have pretty much slain my dragons.
