Shifting Sands

The inspiration for this poem was an article written by Phil Taylor for the December 26, 2011 issue of Sports Illustrated during which he said, “A year in sports is like a wave washing upon the beach: Only after it recedes do we fully appreciate all the shiny new treasures left behind in the sand.”

This poem is about relating that quote to the years of a person’s life. In the case of the waves, it might be a trove of treasure, pretty colored glass, beautiful sea shells, an old ugly piece of driftwood, or maybe nothing but more sand. In a person’s life, a new year might bring a new job, a new friend, a new car, a home or it could be just the passing of another year. It seems you never really know what is coming until you are able to inspect what has been left behind.

SHIFTING SANDS

The years keep coming at you
akin to the waves that come to shore,
with each the anticipation
there might be something more.

Like the shifting sands of the sea shore
at the whim of incoming tide,
our lives are ever changing
as are the rules by which we abide.

It might be a trove of pleasure
as they follow one another,
or it could be extremely painful
as more secrets they uncover.

Always they keep coming,
shifting dreams like sand,
relentlessly changing the landscape
creating obstacles to the plan.

“The years keep coming at you
like the waves that come to shore,
with each the anticipation
there must be something more.”

I have always found the ebb and flow of the tide to be truly fascinating.
This seems to echo the almost musical pulse of those tides and I can almost hear the waves rush and draw as I read.

Happy this one washed up on my shore. I especially like the linkage of the first and final stanzas.

P.S. I believe driftwood adds charater to the landscape, I always appreciate it.

I think it's time I go back and look. Maybe there's something back there in my past I'm overlooking like your poem says. A beautiful expression of longing for gems of wisdom.
