As a youngster I had older siblings from whom I learned my work ethic and from whom I inherited a competitive attitude..... As a retired senior citizen looking back over the years, I can’t remember when I lost "IT" but I’m definitely aware that "IT" is gone.

MISSING ME

I keep searching for that boy of my youth,
the one who always wanted to be the best
at everything he did,
everything he dreamed he’d do
and,,,, who put forth the effort
necessary to accomplish all his goals.

The one who worked hard
because his older siblings always had,
because it was engrained within him
from birth
And,,,,,
because it was expected.

The one who always did one more
than the previous best,
who ran harder,,,,
 and faster,,,,
always trying to be first….

Who jumped higher,,,,
further,,,,
or longer,,,
always striving to be the best.

I miss that boy…
Although I don’t remember him leaving,
he’s been gone for some time now
and I fear he’ll never return.

Missing me…..

I think we all wake up one day and feel exactly this way, Richard...life races by and we don't even feel the breeze from it speeding past.....nicely penned!

It's tough to wake up sdome morning and find that the boynyounonce were is no longer the man you are. I sometimes wonder if, like Barrie said in peter Pan, there is an island of lost boys. If so, I think I'd be the firstbin line for a ticket. Care to join me, Richard?

Very poignantly expressed. That time comes for us all. A time to wind down and leave competition up to the young Turks. I was born just after my twin brother, the eldest. But I took over in the womb and he didn't have a life of his own until I was paralyzed. I remain very competitive, waking each day to write a better book, win on the stock market, and manage my complex affairs with skill.

When that day comes, I will accept it with grace, knowing that I have prepared well for a long life ahead. However, if stem cells come along, I'll get back out on the golf course and beat my brother's ass! ;-)

You've been holding that tree up in your profile pic for a long time. I suggest you climb it, swing from it a time or two. Maybe if I expected you to do it you could. I jest but I feel where you're coming from.

Yeah, I hear you Richard. No, he won't be back. Yes, he is gone forever. Relax. You did what you did, now it is time to just think back and smile at the things you accomplished, and be grateful for each new day that comes your way, buddy.

Still Living on my Feet is the follow up to Tichaona Chinyelu’s first book, In the Whirlwind, which was rooted in a sense of hard-hitting revolutionary black love. However, in this sophomore effort, Tichaona brings the revolutionary essence from deep
