Today’s edition of the continuing saga, Wanderin Man – 8 – Mardigras Exit Strategy

WANDERIN MAN
“MARDI GRAS – EXIT STRATEGY”

Things don’t always go as planned,
someone’s a bangin on my door
so I grab my Smith-N-Wesson
jist to even up the score.

I peek out from the curtain
we’ve attracted a crowd.
There’s a half a dozen bad asses
an they’re gittin kinda loud.

They’re attractin lots of attention,
not really what I had planned
but this crappy ol motel room
ain’t no place fer my stand.

My hog is parked out back,
her car is around in front,
That’s the way I planned it,
case they still were on the hunt.

So, I dialed 911,
dropped the phone on the floor,
left a live connection,
as the shitter winder became my door.

Hit the fire alarm as I left,
as another “jist in case.”
Soon they’d be a crawlin
all around this place.

I left her to worry about
making the explanations,
I needed only a couple minutes
to make some preparations.

I might a mentioned,
time has learnt me some tricks,
bout survivin on the road…
though none includin chicks.

So as I was leavin,
I gave her an extra grand,
Said, “I’ve got to git on the road,
in case I have to make a stand.

“Maybe, in a day or so,
I’ll be seein you around,
but til I git my bankroll stashed
I’ll be seekin higher ground.”

I was thinkin, maybe she betrayed me
with a message to her cronies.
Think I mentioned that I’d known her
but she wern’t my “one-an-only.”

Cain’t fault her fer makin a livin
the best she knowed how,
we’ll conversate more later,
I’m concerned with here-an-now.

I needed to keep my wits,
least til I’m on the road.
This chick was extra baggage
I couldn’t handle the extra load.

My boots hit the ground a runnin
my hog was close at hand.
This ain’t my first rodeo,
my escape was already planned.

My hog was waitin patiently,
nobody to be seen,
I kicked her over quickly
an quietly left the scene.

Tomorrow I’ll be back
or maybe the followin day,
this ain’t nothin but a thing,
there’s still more games to play.

And I thought this was about Mardi Gras! “as the shitter winder became my door.” is a line for all time. Really enjoyed your ruminations about being a bad ass from your rocking chair.

And the Harley goes, “putter putter putter…”

I'm with Jerry, a quiet hog? Don't you know it's against the law to throw a false fire alarm? I mean really. Patrick

Your style is addictive. You've got the voice that rakes like face stubble and shakes dust from road boots. It is quibbly, snarky, jovial, sly, tabaccoish, jingling, and I feel like I have a bit of a tooth missing listening to your story here. The cadence is grande and slappy, full of playful danger and assumed heroism. Like the women who will read however many Harlequin novels there are in the universe, I feel like I want to read each and every one of these. Bottom's Up ~~ Diana
