It was cold outside the castle,
finding good meat became a hassle.
The king had summoned his hunters,
who were practically stunters.
None of them had a good eye,
unless it was for the kings apple pie.
King Edward was short on meat,
and was looking for a holiday treat.
Fearing the loss of his other wing,
turkey took to hiding.
On the last Thanksgiving,
turkey barely escaped the dressing.
The king only took one wing,
which got turkey to thinking.
The king was big and fat,
greedier than the castle cat.
Turkey made his holiday plans,
which had nothing to do with the pots and pans.
He hid right up under the kings nose,
a place where the king barely goes.
The king was afraid of his attic,
weird noises at night put him in a panic.
For years turkey spook the place,
while the king slept on his face.
Turkey thought ahead,
so that he wouldn't end up dead,
especially if the hunters didn't come through,
he knew he didn't want to end up stew.
Turkey knew he was only a standby pet,
just incase the king couldn't find meat to eat.
The king fed him good,
so that turkey would make more food.
Turkey was wise,
and planned a big surprise.
Tired of being a standby treat,
turkey fixed a trap for the fat kings feet.
Every morning the king fed his alligators,
in front of his royal spectators.
With no straps for food,
the alligators were in a hungry mood.
As the king stepped to water edge,
he tripped over turkey and fell over the ledge.
The king became a Thanksgiving meal,
then turkey and the jester shook on the deal.
The jester hated the king,
because he paid him nothing.
After the kings death,
the jester recouped some of his wealth.
He and turkey then left the castle in good health.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
Enjoyed this read!!

Looks like a happy ending for the turkey and the jester. Thank you, and a Happy Thanksgiving to you, too. While I read this, I was imagining pictures for a children's book.
As for the poem, (Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!) it's precious, adorable, festive and cheery. Makes one get in the medieval/British/Thanksgiving mood.
