Standing on the rock ledge
at twilight, overlooking
the purple radiance
deepening toward a distance
of tired questions, loneliness
and wonder, I ask why we climb
the cliffs of human emotion
as if marooned in a sphere
of infinite strangeness,
only to become the very stones
on which we stand.
A cool breeze stirs in the pines.
And I swear it enters me like a murmur
after a troubling dream, saying:
