I watch them peering over the old
wood fence, two friends who have grown
together and apart: such friends
to wager the human heart!

Since they were babies,
with the gypsy music playing,
they have touched across the mystery
a source known only to themselves.

But he has moved off a little distance,
to army men and imaginary missiles;
she to nail polish and Barbie dolls.

They cannot always meet.
A question plays with them now,
unthinking, becoming discreet.

A scrawny grey cat moves across
the fence, leaps into a neighbor's yard
and disappears.

I watch them watching that,
lost, for a moment, in the overwhelming
affection of being alive.
