Anonymous Hours

Trace the fossil record,
you will not find me.
I am night forced out of hiding,
hungry for a few clear bones.

My song is merely translation,
an itch nothing can console.

My lover is shape and consequence,
the bouyancy of island, insistence
of sea -- my work an echo
preserved in form.

Time gestures on the rim of a cloud.
I carry the fire home.
