An old blue dress, legally blinds eyes, and a stuttering old ccomputer captured memories that brought this memory home again and set me on a long ago path back to my childhood.
The Path
I followed a meadowlarks song down a little weed grpwn path,
and found the perfect scope of pines
where I sat me down to ponder.
I pondered where tomorrow would lead me
as I beheld a patch of sky
that brought to mind a dress my mother made for me.
It was lovely and I felt her hand on me again, soft and warm and oh so loving.
The remembered feel of her hands
brought the smile in her eyes to my inner sight, and I saw the smile of love she gave me and I smiled back.
I got to my feet and started back down the path,
Letting my feet take me where they would
and the taking was to the front stomp
of a familiar country church
with a small burial ground off to the side
where my mother sleeps.
I heard bird song as I went over to the granite stone
and read it's message.
"Let my visitors enjoy the breeze
and feel the raindrops," the carved words said
"Let them stop and rest awhile in remembrance of other days,
and spend some happy moments in remembering.
Unwritten words said,"I will see you in that morning of gladness."
I brushed away a tear of joy
when memeory brought my mother's smile back again
as she placed her remembered hand on me,
and I was on the pathway of childhood once more
for a little while.
