She faded to grey

Whilst in the ICU with my Son recently, a little girl of One, was brought in, she had drowned in the family pool, whilst her mother snoozed near the waters edge!..She had been revived, just, but after a period of 35 mins or more. The Mother had already given up hope, the machine was doing the breathing for her baby girl, and decisions had to be made.
Though the outcome ultimately was shattering for the parents and all who did witness this, it was far better for it to be over quickly, than to continue on. It had already become ugly, hot off the press within hours. One of the women supporting the mother, a friend, broke down outside in the waiting room. She had taken a terrible earbashing from the little girls parents, for trying to comfort them, and for trying to impress upon them that God was in control of their daughters life... I felt the immediate need to make ernst petition, so with the Mothers friend in tow, and with her permission, we did. I honestly believe that if there was any quality of life left within this little girl, she would've been brought back, but sadly it wasnt the case. I learned from the mother then next day that her vitals had deteriorated rapidly, and so the decision to switch off was made. He let us Know his will, He never leaves us floundering around endlessley wondering, if we ask him!

I recall being asked if I would consider switching off machines if my Son who just had major surgery, ever failed to have quality of life. I gave them a curt reply" there is only one who makes that decision, and it's not me, or you, dont ask me that again"
They never have, but when he was three, he was left on the ward after a proceedure to stop him from refluxing from the stomach incessantly.Instead of being monitored in the ICU, Morphine was administered on a busy ward, to a child with deteriorating kidneys!!! He was a code blue, and for long enough to take out brain cells, leaving him permanently challenged..

Looking back at it all now, I know I was within my rights to sue, but that wouldn't off restored what was lost. All I know is that he is a fantastic boy, with a heart of gold, and a simplistic way of seeing the world. Sometimes it's a blessing to see the world through his eyes, he holds neither grudge nor knows hatred of any human being...
Little Chelsea was taken to her rest, I don't know why it had to be that way ultimately, but I know this much, one of the first questions I have on my big long list to ask the Creator, is WHY?
I am sure he will oblige with truths that we couldnt percieve here and now, and rest comforted in this knowledge.

This is a grey area, a bone of contention for so many. I would like to make it plain, that my prayers along with those of the other womans, and others, were answered quickly, not because there was anything special about either or us, rather that simply because we asked, and because ultimately the Lord needs willing people to petition for others who cannot do so for themselves.

An Enemy hath done this thing....In drowning her to start with.

She Faded to Grey

I knew her for but a moment
this tiny waif of a child

monitors tracing patterned demise
of a mind long gone

I only touched her for a moment
watched the flickering of her eyes

as I asked the Almighty to restore her
if indeed there was anything left to do thus

I knew there would be a decisive answer
as I felt the Holy Spirit warm my inner being

Whilst my hand still rested upon her forehead

The next day revealed the answer..

They prepared her, I watched from my Son's bay
one by one her family said their goodbyes

then, off went the switches
I turned away for a while

When next I looked over
her outstretched stiffened arms

had already faded to grey...

i knew of an acquaintance that experienced the same tragic ordeal ... it's truly heartbreaking ... you poem handles the entire ramifications of such an experience with the compassion that no doubt is part of your nature ... god doesn't cause things to happen, he allows them to occur ...

Ch'erie ...

What a heartrending experience you endured. You have painted the moments with somber vividness, and deep emotion. We are indeed in the Creators hands. And at those times when we make our requests, we can only hope that they are His will. Profoundly written. Blessings to you dear heart!

Light and Wisdom ...

I feel the family's pain in my heart. We know that God has taken her into His arms and forever more will protect her. Thank you for sharing this with us. I don't know you but I do know you are a wonderful person.

Che'erie, my sweet friend, I relate far too closely to this to comment completely in this small space, so once again, we will communicate. But briefly, having witnessed this powerful decision to put fate into God's hands, I have shared his decision and wisdom more often than I would have ever expected with a variety of outcomes. I am so deeply touched by your gift of poetry in tribute to this small child and if I might, I'd like to share it with my brother who lost his two year old son this very same way. Your compassion is immense Che'erie. I wish there were more like you.

Love and hugs...you deserve far more,
Taylor

This is indeed a sad story, Ch'erie, but God for sure is in control. He grants us loved us for a time, sometimes for a short time. This little girl had her role to play, even though it was short and we mere mortals don't understand. He allows us to go through pain to mature us and to keep us from turning away from Him. This little girl is back with the Father. Whether the mother sees her again is entirely up to her and her faith. You did the right thing, praying, thus giving her permission to let go and returning her to the Father. A friend of mine carried her baby boy to full term. She delivered a dead baby! She held him for a time, then she had to let go. Many questions why? One day all will be made clear.

God Bless
Love, Lena

This one grips the heart and clutches it in a nightmarish scenario none of us ever hope to see, especially to a loved one. An excellent capture of total heartbreak:

Truly heartbreaking, Ch'erie, and I truly often wonder, as you do - why - for so many of these heartbreaking tragedies in this world of ours.
