The punters smoking outside Davey's bar
were about to go back inside for
another round when suddenly it happened
the heavens opened up
the boys tasted whisky in every raindrop
a whisky shower, and it was single malt!

They brought out glasses, then pints
and laughed to see them fill up
with the amber gold, the pure nectar;
they were like bees congregating
around the sweetest pollinating
pixilated bush or tree

God was chucking it down
buckets and barrels of whisky
it was like T in the Park, a festival
Brew dogs and whisky connoisseurs
the Scots and the Irish -
whisky, whiskey, whisky galore!

They were steaming, they were blootered
dancing in the streets, jigs and reels
the pubs emptied, their landlords
mystified, business at a standstill.

The police arrived, took photographs,
names and addresses;
even tee-total constables
could smell whisky in the air,
something dangerously libertarian.

The whisky shower increased in power
Glenlivet Glenmorangie, Teachers, Powers
wee Archie thought he could taste peat
and apricot, a hint of jasmine;
he was just back from China, you see!

People bonded, the welder, the lawyer
and the librarian
the unemployed were overjoyed
to be drinking the hard stuff
for nuthin'
No explanation for it, officer,
it must be the angel's share
or somethin'

God's distillery, atomic like Fukishima
Santoro, Japanese whisky?

They dived in, they swam in the gutter,
they rolled in the mud, they were drunk
the police rounded them up
into the vans and off to the cells
the student and the dedicated alkie

Suddenly, the shower stopped
the whisky shower called time
the sun broke out in a smile
Did ye have a good time?

From Govan to Leith, the west and east,
along the Forth and Clyde canal
no one will forget the day
it rained whisky - Cheers, mate!

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
