There's a whole panoply of poets
whose work can be pure Greek
to a young Turk, and think of all the forms!
Odes as feathery as nightingales
Roundels traditional as Maypoles
elegies heavy as clay
comic verse as light as Pavlova
sonnets as fresh as a fourteen-year-old
I feel like a two-year-old
trying to understand the ABC of it
I'm on the first rung of the ladder
the foothills of the Himalayas,
nowhere near Parnassus.
In school, I remember being frustrated by poetry, not being able to understand most poets. Some thrive on being obtuse, using extra-long words. Now I pick and choose the poems I want to read. The words aren't as important as the message within.
