Welcome to Port Sunlight, the village founded by ‘Soap King’ William Hesketh Lever in 1888. The village was built to house Lever’s ‘Sunlight Soap’ factory workers, but today is home to a fascinating museum, beautiful architecture, a world-class art gallery, stunning parkland and a thriving community.
Port Sunlight
Rome's eternal vistas are truly wonderful,
Out of the marshes arose Venice's grand palazzos
A story as colourful as the Pre-Raphaelites
And it seems the sun has suddenly arose
Here in England where we toil in factories
Removed from our ancient country villages
Poets and painters and beautiful Dante Gabriel
Rossetti ladies in resplendent clothes
The old paintings have cleaned up bright, Ma'am
Where else should we live? Heaven knows!
Port Sunlight, Port Sunlight, no serpents or darkness
Down the pub, no Temperance and The Beatles
even played one night
Thank God for the Soap King and his model village
That's made such a difference to the workers' lives;
A nice place on the Wirral near Birkenhead
And Liverpool, that's Port Sunlight!
This collection of poetry addresses the nature of time, reflections on the natural world, the difficulty of loss,
contemporary social issues and gratitude for life.
