Russian dolls nest inside each other, they get smaller and tinier, you know, you've seen them, fascinating and economical use of space.

Empty Nester

I'm told some birds don't nest,
others nest like Russian dolls,
they get warmer and warmer.

Nesting inside together,
an economical use of space sharing
the same little cabin bed.

Someone sharing the long journey,
the samovar on the trans-Siberian Express,
someone warm and friendly.

You build a home thinking it's forever
Ah! when the kids spread their wings
the air empties from the room (it's colder!)

Son and daughter gone off to college
and no one at home with mom,
A little bird tells me you're an empty nester

waiting for someone warm and friendly
to come aboard and share this life-
changing journey to Tomsk.

I'm not sure what the Russian influence is, but I'm sure you can explain it to me.

After raising two families, 16 years apart, my folks were more than glad to become empty-nesters when we flew the coop. Unfortunately, during the Summer of 1981, I took up residence with them in the musty vacant nest of my younger brothers because my warm nest in Atlanta had been rented for good money. They were glad to see me fly off south again in the fall.
