I was on another poetry site (Starlite Cafe), and all the poetry I happanded to click on was sort of sad and reflective. My readings were very random, yet reading it all got me to thinking, and inspired me to write this.

Canary Dead Will Not Be Heard

Where do we store, unwanted thoughts
Where good turned bad,are lost & caught
Down the shaft, into the dark
Close the mine, and strike the mark

How deep, how deep, do fragments seep
The journey down,reveals the found
Top exposed, each layer rests
Upon the mask, exposed as blessed

Within the shaft, is all unseen
The dark, would blanket as a screen
And yet collected at the end
Pretentions weary and expend

A limbo hovers on descent
Reminisence sparks regret
Gas is poison to the bird
Canary dead, will not be heard

yay Ron,

yes the use of the canary and mine were merely metaphores.......

this was not about miners or canaries, but about dwelling on things long buried.....and not letting go...

thanks Ron :)

Wow, a profound write my friend...reaches the depths of one's heart and soul...you've expressed it well...reminds me of the coal mines that my family has worked in as far back as I can remember...I've heard stories about how they used canary to foresee their fate...touching write!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

My linking mind is linking this with Frank Whyte's latest. Soldiers too-- caught and placed in a narrow opening between our warring politics. Their voices sing freedom, and are meant to save lives. Their voices that are silenced forever from poisonous hatred should be remembered. And perhaps someday we'll find a less dangerous way of securing life and goods for everyone!
I really like the newsprint-like fonts you've used. Their changing sizes builds interest and emphasis to your poem. --Charlie

Coming from a place where coal mines once prospered and made fotunes for their owners while keeping working men and their families virtual prisoners who feared growing sick or the dreaded alarms of a cave in I can truly appreciater this write. Those little canaries saved many a life by giving enough warning that the dangerous gases were in the air and to get out of the mine. Excellant write.

Canary dead, will not be heard

How so very true, Queen Dremas. And yet, once again, a marvelous quote!

Poets lift the veil where the canary goes . . . Sadness is part and parcel of a poets (some) life . . . When the canary stops singing that is when poets raise their voices . . .
