The View From Behind At Forty-Nine

by Frank P Whyte — Read all 321 poems by Frank P Whyte

On the occasion of my 49th birthday.

Thursday, May 19, 2005

Milestones are behind us,
Notable points where we have been,
And there will be many yet before us,
As we travel onward toward the end.

I cheer all of those,
Whose courses were charted,
Who knew where they were going,
Before they ever got started.

But as to my destination,
Of that I remain unsure,
For turns in the road, and changes in the ode,
Still hold an attractive allure.

But this wounded body of mine,
Seems to have a mind of its own,
And while the spirit remains free,
The mind protects fragile bones.

As I grow older and strikingly slower,
Each day holds a bit more pleasure.
The love in my life, and reduction in strife,
Is the method by which I measure.

I still love just as much,
The beaches and mountains in morning,

But I must admit that it’s simpler now,
That there is little that happens without warning.

It took some time
To find true love,
But that’s all that I ever wanted.
And even though some things are missing for me,
I’ll never take it for granted.

For as all else begins to fade away,
And we inch our way down the lane,
It is that easy-going love in my life,
That carries me from day to day.
