Our Family at War

by Frank P Whyte — Read all 321 poems by Frank P Whyte

Thursday, August 18, 2005

It is a matter that causes me wonder;
The resilience of the common man,
Who faces countless trials each day,
But he's doing the best that he can.

Most devastating, it would seem,
Are the times when we are surprised,
Ambushed on the road of life,
By an enemy in disguise.

We must pack it up and move on,
Each day but there is no cure,
We would like to put the foolishness behind us,
In our struggle to endure.

And we get a little better at this,
Each and every day,
And we learn better how to navigate the course,
And to avoid the traps that have been put in our way.

Imagine for a moment,
If you only can,
If we were all just one big family;
A brotherhood of man.

And then you would be accepted,
No matter your color or belief,
We would welcome you as our family,
It would be such a grand relief.

Come into our home and join us,
And can you stay for the evening meal?
Yes, I can see the resemblance,
Our familial bond is most real.

But for now the war drums bang,
And young men are dying by the score,
We are very reluctant to accept each other,
Even though we know,
That a smile and a hug will open so many more doors.

I'm afraid you are sadly wrong about the so-called family of man. Hell, Frank, real families can't get along, never mind the whole world as a family. I agree that some king of solution need to be worked out to stop man's inhumanity to men, but I an not all that optimistic about it.
