The Bastard of the Night

Poem Artwork

Life would be so grand,
If only there were rules to guide it,
That said children cannot die,
Nor Dads or Moms, or puppies
Who sleep at night in our beds.

If there could only be an end to heartbreak,
I would gladly give all that I have,
To the bastard of the night,
Who revels in the pain
Of tortured souls.

But for now we must weep,
And try to fill the holes in our hearts,
For even the misfortunes of strangers,
Touch us one and all,
And remind us,
That God granted dominion unto the Deceiver.

And now mayhem does he savor,
On this Earth he believes his own,
And he laughs at the agony of our struggle,
Drawing perceived power unto himself.
But perhaps, he might stop,
And listen to the sound of singing,
Rising from a one room chapel in the woods,
For in that joyful voice,
Lies his own just demise.

Evil lies all around us,
But the good even more.
There are liars on the news at night,
But the pauper's words are pure.

And so I implore you,
And it is all of you I call.
Sing your songs from the mountaintop,
And say your prayers out loud.
Be the first to forgive a slight,
And forever defend the weak.
When you see evil manifest,
Strike it down with righteousness,
And never, ever feel that this life,
This world, these tremendous gifts
That we receive every day, are just about you;
For alas, they are not.
This is our shared community,
And our shot at eternity.
Make it one where joy abounds,
And the guy next to you is a humble man,
And not the jerk who kidnapped your child,
Or raped your wife,
Or stole food from your aging mother.
No!
We have all been given much,
And from all of us, much is yet expected.
Live fully.
Live righteously.
Overwhelm evil with goodness,
And pray for mercy.

Frank,
Points well taken. No one looks for that kind of eternity.
