Poem Artwork

Skipping stones,
At the stream bed all alone,
Mom said I need to go away.
I’m only ten years old,
Mom says to do what I’m told,
But above all,
I’m to leave her alone.

I’m hungry, Mom,
Where has all of the peanut butter gone?
Would you find me something to eat?
Check the refrigerator, son,
I’ll be there when I get done,
Why can’t you just leave me alone?

Kicking stones,
In the driveway all alone,
Where did everybody go?
First it was my Dad;
He said my Mom made him sad,
But now there’s nobody here.

Mom thinks she’s a queen,
With enough money so she can buy
France.
I checked the cupboards there,
And all of them are bare,
And as for groceries there isn’t a chance.

I don’t need much, Mom,
But I’m just a little boy.
I need help with my homework,
Some food to eat,
And maybe we could play with my toys.

It’s night time now,
But it’s so hard for me to rest,
I’m more hungry today than yesterday,
And nobody seems to care.
Why have things
Ended like this,
With my sisters gone,
Hands clenched in fists,
And so angry at my mom?

Would somebody please remember me,
I don’t know what’s going to happen.
You’re all very busy,
I know,
But I’m still out here all alone,
Down at the stream bed,
Kicking stones,
Trying to understand what’s happened.
