Poem Artwork

Families and full moons,
Turkeys and holiday balloons,
Grandma’s scalloped corn,
Football games in the park at noon.

I watch as the years go by,
Children grow up and then they fly.
The elders grow older every year,
Telling stories,
Playing cards,
Drinking beer.

Whispers in the corner;
Telling tales,
About scholarships
And bridal veils.
Bobby, it’s not nice to stare.
Jessie, I love what you’ve done to your hair.

I long for the days of old,
Before family love
Had gone forever cold;
When my sister
Was still someone I knew,
And my brothers
Were friends tried and true .

These days we have drifted away,
To each other,
There is little to say.
Our family has been poisoned
By lies,
Fables that the others deny,
A tempest not meant for the wise.

And I,
As the years meander by,
Long for better times:
The smell of Thanksgiving morn,
And Grandma’s scalloped corn;
The elders growing older every year,
Telling stories,
Playing cards,
And drinking beer.

Oddly enough, this poem reminds me of "Grandma's Feather Bed". --so nostalgic. Strange what happens over time when we stop looking--things that ought to bring us together don't--a careless word at a tender time, and the wedge drives in--such a shame. --Charlie

I truly know this feeling! The stories that we shared, the joy, the trials, and a relationship that I thought would be there til the day I died. Sadly, that's not the case. Your poem tells of this sadness, and the longing. We can only pray that someday, somehow ...

God bless you. Kathy

So many words of truth and perception in form fold, great stuff! Jasmin Horst

Ahhh, yes...to go back to the simpler times...before the lies and betrayal forever tainted our views about what life is really all about. But one can never go back, Frank and when we look VERY closely at the imagined perfection of our pasts, we will realize that maybe it was not all so perfect after all.....Great write of longing for utopian times.
