Nobility's Baleful Cry

Poem Artwork

Nobility,
Where are you gone,
In this day when your ways are missed?
Irrespective of class,
You were nearby
In days now remembered.
In the most humble of settings,
Noble hearts,
Those made of stronger stuff,
Loomed when fate was soon to fall.

More than natural reserves,
Your absence wounds us all,
Taking with you
All rational prospect,
For without you,
Diplomacy and honor
Careen without restraint,
Lending unyielding terror
To  journeys destined for dishonor,
Fore sullied death,
When none come to call,
And anthems play not in the distance.

Rise again, Nobility,
From mountaintop and canyon too,
For man has lost his nerve,
Choosing his direction
Where no adversity is found,
With no opinion of his own,
Forever weakened
By his own bland vision,
Which counters none,
And his fear,
Which swells with every dawn.

This is not the likeness
Of God who gave you breath,
Him waiting,
For the heated blood
Of noble souls
Rising in unfettered honor.
There is no reward
In sinister fields,
But Nobility is a challenge
To you still.
Take thy place
Among noble souls,
And save thy person,
If you only will.

This is a poem that takes rereading to take it all in... Nobility...those who defend honor and rise above the ordinary... Each of us has nobility within us, if we but rise above the baseness that also lies within. You pen powerful thought provoking words that make me strive to reach deeper and stretch taller...

Almost too fluid to take it all in. Still, the last lines hit hard home. So often we sit and gripe about how everything is-- know nothing we could do would ever put more than a drop in the bucket of healing-- but then, there ARE those who put their drop in again, and again, and again. And when will we ever learn that reaching out to others is the answer to saving ourselves-- and in so doing, saving ourselves as well? --Charlie

This is beautiful - in thought and expression. Wonderful word choices.
