Poem Artwork

The authority of grief overwhelms me,
As the universe is interrupted once more,
Abrupt loss exacts its cost,
Taking from all
That which we can scarcely name.

In your ephemeral demise lies my failure,
Inscribed in rudimentary script,
Immortalized on cavern walls
For all to see my weakness;
Instructed on what I should believe,
And without question,
I closed my soul.

I can still see the face of a lad,
Wanting to be a part of our clan,
But the borders were closed
To outsiders,
So haughty were we
In what we believed,
That we didn’t blink
When we broke a young boy’s heart.

Oh, Bobby, I looked,
And I saw the need in your eyes,
It should have been me
To take up your cause,
But the lines of reality were blurred,
And each of us tried to cling to our own place.

I know that you are with us,
In a dimension between here and there,
And we shall finally have our chance again,
And this time I’ll be better prepared,
For at long last I can say,
Somewhat proudly,
Although it has taken far too much time,
That I am my own man today,
And this time I will do
What is right.

It takes courage to write sometimes, not ad easy at it seems. Especially when we look back and decide to write about things that were once hard to admit.

I hear you... I have similar regrets of my younger days-- one girl in particular... I can only pray to be forgiven. I know better now. It's sad that it takes so much time to learn some lessons-- and often those lessons come too late to spare those fragile hearts. I guess ours is to do a bit better in teaching our young ones about empathy. But then again, like me, there's that cocky "oh, what do you know? look" behind their eyes. But they'll learn too. --Charlie

This poem reminds me of your story, "Limestone and Sycamores"...as it has that same tone of nostalgic regret.
