Gone

by Frank P Whyte — Read all 321 poems by Frank P Whyte

I have been an inner-city emergency room nurse for many years. This poem was inspired by actual events and I will allow it, hopefully, to speak for itself.

Thursday, March 6, 2003

Just twelve years old
And dead.
Pale skin
Paled further by the loss of blood.
Eyes glazed over with damned necrosis.

I would hate him
For what he has done.
But hate is the crime
That brought us here.

They brought you to the lighted room
With a masked man compressing your chest.
But it was warmer here.
And these strangers were more your friends,
Than the friends who left you behind.

I am sorry that you died alone
In the vacant room
Where the Crack man had been.
There wasn't even any furniture.
And you were too young to know
That something was very wrong.

The press will cry of loss tomorrow.
But that will be for the survivors,
Those who came to say that you were
Who they had hoped that you weren't.
But we don't even know what a loss you were.
For you were too young to know,
And you were too young for us to know you.

The Crack man doesn't remember your name,
But I hope that he doesn't forget your face,
That was pale from the loss of blood.
But he will.
And his dead soul will kill again.
I am glad that you can only die once.

I would hate him
For what he has done.
But hate is the crime
That brought us here.

Visceral indeed. It's very unfortuate when something like this happens. I worked in an emergency room for a while and I saw many similar sights. It was terrible.

This is gripping work. You have taken and expressed this horrid ball of emotions that are felt when something like this happens in a very intelligent way. You broke my heart with this. Excellent work! Now....to find a kleenex.

Thank You,
Teresa Emilie

Such eloquent writing depicting the travesties of this world: hate at the heart of it all. Very good, Frank, very good. When you have time, visit my A/D pages.

Quite the game
A face with no name
didnt mean a thing
to the neighborhood dope ring.
This is a tragedy!
Your words depicted a sad story.
Good writing!
Sincerely, Michelle

this stopped me right in my tracks and I was lost for words....which doesnt happen often.
What a waste of a young life. Apart from educating your children and showing them unconditional love, we have to let them go, hoping right will conquer wrong, this lad didnt stand a chance by the sound of it.
A moving write, made me appreciate what I have even more.
