Have you not seen the working of a shadoof?
When the rope of it is pulled, it bends down;
When it is let go, it rises up. It is pulled
By a user and does not pull the user; and so,
Whether it bends down or rises up, whatever,
It commits no offence against its operator.
In the same way the rules of proprieties
And measures established by the ancients
Derived their excellences and virtues
Not from their being the same as those
Of the present day, but from their aptitude
For putting things correct. With due respect,
We may compare them to plums and pears,
Oranges and peaches that all are different
In flavour but suitable to be eaten tastefully.

Deborah
