Poem Artwork

A literary man's destination, at large,

Is a series of qualitative leaps

Clear of lack and abundance.

There are mountains and streams,

Births and deaths, delusions and

The grades of understanding, yet

In attachment cherry blossom time

And in aversion chaff and draff,

Much better burnt to ashes --

Like nobody's business he behaves.

Being a climber, these thoughts remind me of Malory's famous quote as to why he climbed Everest: Because it's there. For a writer, especially one like yourself, the explanation for what and why you write is, as you say, as Mallory was probably thinking, "Like nobody's business he behaves." Classic.

Thinking he knows where he is headed and yet in the end, he is the one who is capable of realizing it is better left unsaid...

As usual, I don't find the clarity that others find… Like Richard's clear Yogi Berra -like statement, "each of us understands everything we understand."

Like your ending where a reference to "burning" someone's literary work because it is, "nobody's business," ends with, "he behaves." I can only conclude that it's some kind of misbehavior for literary work to be burned rather than published.

Not just quantitative leaps but gualitative leaps, as in this poem. John
