Whipping up the Lagging Sheep

Poem Artwork

I have heard from my teacher who said

That they who skilfully nourish their life

Are like shepherds who whip up the sheep

That they saw lagging behind the flock. . .

When asked he explained his meaning,

Saying, "There was one man who lived

In the mountains and drank only morn dew.

He would not share with people in their toils

And the benefits springing from their efforts;

And though he was then in his seventieth year,

He had still the skin of a newborn baby. . .

One day, he encountered a hungry tiger,

Which killed and ate at one go.

"There was also another man who hung up

At his lofty gate a signboard of a dealer in this

And that trade, to whom all men hurried to pay

Their visits for getting an appropriate service.

Regrettably, in his fortieth year, he fell ill

Of a fever and died suddenly.

"Of these two men, one nourished

His inner strength, but the fierce beast

Ate his outer appearance while another

Nourished his outer abilities,

But disease attacked him from within.

"That happened for all the same reason:

They both neglected whipping up

Their lagging sheep indeed."

I'm sorry, but I didn't get the parable.

But it did remind me of Trump trying to whip up his lagging sheep last night at the debate. What a pitiful performance!
