Just look at the spring, The water of which Rises and overflows -- It does simply nothing, But it naturally acts so. Then look at the autumn, The leaf fall of which Is death and life in the flesh -- It simply sacrifices the old To serve the new. So with the true man And his virtuous merit -- He does not cultivate it, And simply nothing Evades its influence. He is like Heaven Which is high of itself, Like humble Earth Which is solid of itself, Taking the lower space; Like the sun and the moon Which day and night Shine of themselves -- What need is there To cultivate Thing-in-itself?
