The Fallen into Oblivion

All those who are unversed

In the warp and woof scheme

Of the universe,

The beginning and ending

Of the subject,

Cannot be set down

As of the venerable masters

And regarded

As the predecessors of others.

 

If men have not that in them,

Which fits them

To precede others, they are

Without the way

Proper to man; and those

Who are without

The way proper to man

Can only be pronounced

As defunct monuments of oblivion.

The "Path" is one of the most elusive values most people are either ignorant of or choose to avoid, thus well on their way to becomes "defunct monuments of oblivion. I can totally appreciate your words here.

I'm not sure what is meant by the way, "proper to man." However, we owe a lot to our predecessors and it is said that we stand, "on the shoulders of giants." I do suppose that if we don't contribute to the knowledge of our forbearers, we are part of oblivion. But only a small part of each generation contributes. Most are just parents producing prodigy.

Alex, is it possible that the unfortunates are, at least, part of the warp or the woof of all things, even if not enlightened enough to be called predecessors?
