Poem Artwork

At first, you start to feel vexation;
Then the vexation turns to stupor.
Slowly but surely, your hopes
And dreams for the future
Begin to die inside you --
You are on the skids.

That's when things start to fall apart:
You gain your fat in less than a year;
Your energy and your libido
Take collapse -- you feel yourself
A pappy guy greased
For the nosedive from within.

You criticize your wife and kids,
And become completely wretched
To live with. . . You finally admit
To your miserable self that business
You have started back about a decade
Is a huge mistake and fails to run.

Feeling crushed and utterly defeated,
You start sending out CVs, but the only place
Where your reputation as an expert surges up
Is on the couch, just in front of your box,
With a beer in hand and a bag of chips
In your lap. Aren't you a living corpse? . .

I turned seventy-nine last Monday. Put a computer in that picture and and some clothes on that body, and then you will have me.

An all too common occurrence. Well stated and the picture is worth at least 10,000 words. I have noticed many TV videos of the general public that that kind of middle-aged posture seems to be more the norm than the exception.

On the other hand, I think that guy in the picture is pregnant, and therefore going to add to the human race more young folks to, "Make us great again."

What a picture you paint of sheer misery and it all start, as you say, "from within". With no one else to blame but oneself. A terrible state indeed.

Yup! Pretty much so. A fine characterization. Nobody plans to be broke, fat, lazy, or stupid. Those are the things that happen when you don't have a plan. The first thing in the human personality that dissolves in alcohol is dignity. In my life I've seen it far too often. Your poetic voice is changing. More clarity and light I think. Peace... r
