For the life of me, I don't have a clue as to the real title of this song, so I made one up!
Sometime in the early Seventies, I was in a club with a bunch of guys, who were neighbors and friends. We called ourselves 'The Sports-Nighters.' Every Wednesday evening, we would meet at a chosen bar, or other place, and do something that involved some kind of sport. From darts to pool, from basketball to tennis, from shuffleboard to poker, from ping-pong to Match-Pack Football - all the while consuming exorbitant amounts of - BEER!
Anyway, five of these guys worked at The Social Security Complex in Woodlawn, Maryland, and were all Alumni's of the University of Wisconsin. Tom Labuwe, Don Bruchman, Mike Splitgerber, George Martin, and Mal Sneen ... these were the names from whence I learned this song.
I have sung it many, many times through all these years, and taught it to several family members, who just LOVE it!
Whenever we got a real ‘Load On’
We ‘oft chanted the lines of none other than -
“The Whiffenpoof Song’ also!
‘Twas late in the Evening.
The guests were all Leaving,
O’Leary was closin' the Bar,
When he turned and he Said,
To the Lady in Red,
“Get Out! You can’t Stay where you Are!”
She wept a sad Tear,
In her Bucket of Beer.
As she did Fear,
Of the Cold Night Ahead ...
When ... a Gentleman Dapper,
Stepped out of the ‘Crapper’ -
And These are the Words that he Said:
“Her Mother never told Her,
The Things a Young Girl should Know,
About the Ways of College Men,
And how they Come, and Go!”
“Now Age has Taken her Beauty,
And Sin has Left its Sad Scar,
So - Remember your Mothers and Sisters, Boys ...
And - Let her Sleep ... Under the Bar!”
