Christmas 2020

by FERIAL I Haque — Read all 8 poems by FERIAL I Haque

Wednesday, December 23, 2020

Christmas is so different this year

Is it because of the micro virus-corona?

Nobody could predict it would bring the Pandemic

In the global community called COVID 19 Pandemic!

I could not see any hope of a Christmas get together

With Turkey Dinner! Or assembling the Christmas Tree

With lights, decorations, gifts under! Christmas Socks

Hanging on the mantel piece for Santa on the Fireplace!

Like another Christmas I did not assemble the Christmas Tree

With lights of many types, I bought on sale after Christmas

Usually known as White Sale in the New Year

In January at the Department Stores for years.

I pause to think where is the excitement to shop,

Enjoy the other rituals of Christmas – the food,

Seeing the National Ballet of Canada perform

At the National Arts Centre their new Ballet.

It makes me so sad because of the pandemic rules

And social distancing in every social event is

Considered violating the law and increasing the

Number of the pandemic victims rocketing high.

Alas, I say a ray of hope has come to our door

A vaccine manufactured by Pfizer Chemical in the cold winter

In Canada – the temperature is – too high - declare

The vaccines - we only exist at minus -70 degree in dry ice

We still think this is the best gift for Christmas 2020!

So, Canadians have worked tirelessly to build the special

Super cold chamber to preserve potency of the vaccine

And vaccinate the frontline workers at the hospitals.

As a retired scientist I thank today’s scientists

Diligently working in the Research Laboratories

To discover the appropriate weapon – the vaccine
