A wicked man finds out too late that death is not the end.

Poem Artwork

The wind was blowing hard that night
But that's not what aroused my fright

Alone in the house the light did fail
I jumped to my feet as I heard a wail

It came from the room behind the door
That hid a corpse laid out on the floor

The strength in my legs abandoned me
I fell in a heap and shattered my knee

The pain was extreme and the fear was bad
I wanted to scream but that'ed be mad

I tried to get up, ready to flee
I couldn't stand because of my knee

I bit my tongue and started to crawl
I didn't get far because of the call

I looked back for the source of the scream
The door was open revealing the scene

What was standing in the gore
Caused my heart to race even more

Eyes glowing red with an evil light
Mouth full of teeth sharp and white

Skin pale and sick, open sores I see
Claws instead of hands reaching for me

Desperately looking at the front door
Would not make it crawling on the floor

I had no weapons not even a knife
Nothing to do but beg for my life

With tears in my eyes, I pled my case
The sound of my voice halted its pace

He gazed at me with a quizzical look
And then he said, "You're own life you took

"This is your blood on where I stand
I have come here to take your hand

"A gun in the mouth is messy you'll find
Once it is done no changing your mind"

Then I recalled my life was so hard
I longed for the peace of a quiet graveyard

Once it was done I sought to find rest
Something was wrong, felt fear in my breast

The hideous creature stood where I fell
"Fear will consume you, I'll drag you to hell"

How could that be, life is the end
I was ready for life to suspend

"You've lived your life with never a thought
Remember now the suffering you brought"

Desperate I struggled to find a way out
This isn't real, I said with a shout

He touched my hand and I screamed in pain
Laughing with glee he touched me again

"What do you think, how did that feel
I tell you this it is very real"

I was told that death was the end
"Whoever said that, wasn't your friend"

Creepy good. I got the chills. It also teaches a good lesson.

Very clever and dark, chilling even. Perfect for Halloween.

The most frightening poem I've read this season. It is certainly the other side of peoples' biblical thoughts of heaven and brings back the fears that people had in them during the Middle Ages when life was so hard and death was feared for its consequences.

Inherent Chaos by Terry Vinson

The fortunate inherit riches, prestige, positive notoriety. Those not so lucky bear legacies filled with poverty, infamy or, worse yet, the unhinged insanity and murderous urges of their ancestors.
