Morning Ecstasy

She lay beside me through the night
Asleep until the morning light.
I reached across the bed we share
To gently stroke her lovely hair.

She breathed a sigh as if she knew
This sort of thing I sometimes do…
Just guarding her through precious sleep
And countless dreams I let her keep.

“How long” she says, “For goodness sake
Have you been lying there awake?”
“Not long enough” I always say.
“No better way to start the day.”

But yes, awake is better still
For love we want to share, and will…
Beneath the sheets she comes to me
To share in morning ecstasy.
