I was listening to a musician with absolutely no idea she rode horses, but I came up with this while writing. Very different from what I intended at the time...but maybe it was what she was feeling as she sang.

On The Run

The horse she rode was “River Wind”
The two as one, almost a blur-
Forgive me father if I’ve sinned-
In feeling what I do for her.

I’m just a man but I can run
Across the ridges, to and fro-
And throw my shadows with the sun-
To mark the journey where they go.

I’m just the watcher, she’s a dream-
We’re painting with an artist’s brush-
I run until I have to scream-
But then the vision makes me hush.

The woman strong, the beast so proud-
But they can’t see me where I hide.
This rocky ledge a solid cloud
Such pressure that I feel inside.

Yet as I watch them run again-
The short cuts are my stock and trade-
And I will catch them, I know when-
And no one’s going to be afraid.

The perfect spot, I get there first-
To raise my hand in beckoning,
I know we all have got this thirst-
Today’s the day of reckoning.

At last they look me in the eyes-
My arms held open, catching rays-
An open book- for she is wise-
To see the light from heart’s ablaze.

I must now wait under their glare-
To prove to both my heart is true -
As sunlight glistens through her hair,
I feel my heart will break in two.

Yet what is there to see but light?
With all reflections clear to see.
The three of us, a blessed sight-
And love at last our destiny.

Horses know our souls,
and if we can; we should
do the same...

Nice poem, John. But I still don't think you can compete with the horse. There's a reason women love horses...
