Modern Pterydactyl

by Deborah K. Frontiera — Read all 14 poems by Deborah K. Frontiera

The great blue heron is an odd combination of beauty and awkwardness that makes one think back to its possible ancestors. Deborah K. Frontiera captures this contradiction in this poem.
This poem appears on page 35 of Deborah's new book, The Nature of Life.

Poem Artwork

Modern Pterodactyl by Deborah K. Frontiera

Great blue heron stands still

His feathers the tan grey-blue

Of a twilight sky

When gold and red have faded

Just before the dark settles

Stick legs half above, half below the water

One might think him another reed

Until his yellow beak stabs a frog or small fish

He stretches out aloft

An elegant aerial ballet

Beyond time and place

In flight they are graceful and majestic. On land, as you say, they are a mix of strange, to weird looking. Nice wording within the confines of the poem.

Beautifully and delicately written Deborah. Like the graceful flight of that great bird. They do kind of reflect that long ago flying reptile in many ways. I enjoyed this immensely. Bob

My first recollection of a great blue heron was when we were walking in upper Michigan at my grandfather's logging camp and found one hung on a tree, shot and discarded by some gun happy hunter. I have seen many since in bayous and river ways.

I believe I have a poem, titled Predator, about the pterodactyl, posted here somewhere that you might enjoy.
