African Winter

A hot winter day was over. Cool (just to give me a shiver) Harmattan winds swirled through empty streets. Remembering Dakar.

Desert winds blow silty dust

And whistle through white-painted lanes

Hazy afternoon’ light, orange and mellow

The bay resembles a Turner aquarelle

Midnight stars up on the sky

Vividly sparkle and twinkle

Loneliness 


Lazy and relaxed

I close my eyes in the turquoise room

To listen to the noises from all around us

A goat’s hoof scratches cobblestone ground

Angry meows, then hollow steps, a beggar’s curse

Lipstick’s creamy path sounds like falling snow

Mumbles from a neighbor’s patio

Laughter, shouts, an outcry of joy

After 6 years in West Africa I certainly know the harmattan's effects. Each evening after 6p.m. was dark but the voiced always broke through. Dakar onec for me but in a cargo boat coming home via Amsterdam. Sadly West Africa is not so peaceful since my days there. Nevertheless you catch the magic of West Africa.
