It's not their Shoah* anymore -
build your own memorial,
light your candle
sing your song to it's crescendo
with bated fanfare ---
and remember the fallen.
Flaming memory lingers
in the acrid air -
as the candle burns it's last breath.
the wax smells of ash
red shot eyes remember loved ones fallen.
911 holds them in memory -
tears glue themselves to faces
frozen in time, nightmares, daydreams
futures, love lost and gone,
with hopes and dreams sigh ghostly voices
their echoes dwindle to a whisper
with the wind.
The young do remember
they'll learn to tell the stories
of the heroes who fell that day.
With bated breath, and a song to sing
of everyday angels who gave for others.
Love binds them and holds them to us
like a babe wrapped in steel thread.
