People should never make any promises, unless they mean it.
Also, there are differences in saying that:
"I will do that."
and
"I will do that, I promise."
So when somebody say to you, "I will do it." does not normally mean a promise to you, rather, it was a commitment to the speakher himself/herself. It bears no obiligations to others rather than the speaker.
That is the difference between a promise and an obligation.
100% I agree, except in the case of sex when you discover the S.O.B. is foul with his clothes off or pulls out whips and chains and is very much into your feeling pain, then I think you can break a promise. ;-) Sorry, too many logic classes.
