Wheelchair Perspective

Jerry Bolton put up a poem yesterday called 'Metamorphous' and one verse in particular reminded me of the weeks I spent confined to a wheelchair, and later, on crutches. I may be doing that again in the near future!!

Wheelchair Perspective

The shoppers wander all over the place,
abandoning trolleys in the middle of the aisle.
Looking like zombies with blank staring face
and leaving their children alone to run wild.

Sometimes in groups they tend to gather,
forget where they are, causing constriction.
Seems they are here just to gossip and chatter,
and that can create such bedlam and friction.

That woman with the trolley
is heading straight for me,
she’s looking every which-way
but the way she’s supposed to be.

She is totally oblivious
of everything around,
except for what she wants to see
what bargains can be found.

Now she has spotted something
and she is glaring at me!
I think that I am in HER way,
well sorry, if that’s the way it be.

She doesn’t stop to think
how difficult is is,
for someone in a wheelchair,
shopping should never be like this.

I cannot reach that top shelf,
it’s way too high for me,
I need a kind and friendly face
who will help when need be.

If you see someone shopping
and walking on crutches,
or stretching for the top shelf
from their wheelchair,
Don’t stand back staring,
complaining or frowning,
but with a smile, offer help,
If you feel that it’s needed.

(((jackie)))

having spent time in a wheelchair, and on crutches and a cane, i identify sooooo well with this write

what used to tick me off the worst? someone stops dead still in front of you, you can't stop, and you run into them--then they cuss you out, because you ran 'em over--grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr that used to make me SO mad

now i just hit 'em with my cane *not really* but there are times i want to LOL

i'm not in your way--get out of *my* way!!!!

this is a keeper--powerfully written

(((HUGS))) and love,

karla. :)

BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!

i walk on crutches, and i know exactly what you mean when people stare or make comments and look at you like you are dirt. it is very upsetting, and annoying, and i am glad you wrote this! people with disabilities aren't to be pitied or rediculed; they are people, too, and they demand to be treated with respect and compassion! ((((HUGS)))) and much love, a disabled person who knows what it is like "to be in the way", karen lynn in texas. :( people ought to show us a little more in the way of understanding, courtesy, or compassion, for THEY could be in our shoes someday! >:(

Jackie this is great. I've seen people purposely look the other way rather than help someone obviously in need...we need to remember that old saying "There but for the grace of God go I" !! Great write....
