“Remember, man, that you are dust,”
the priest repeats monotonously while
making the mark on each solemn face
in the line that seems endless,
“and unto dust you shall return.”
We don’t remember, of course,
or this ritual would be unnecessary.
This yearly reminder is required
since we fail to realize on our own
that beneath our beautiful houses, and
fertilizing our neatly manicured lawns
are millions of bones.
