painted kites with tails of cotton sheets skip among drifting
clouds
small town children, barefooted, tug
on string attached to
wood framed airships, green eyes as
to watch like Catis eye
marbles
spun off of fingers with knees buried
‘round a sandy circle
smell of twisted hemp on hands gets
lost in lake
water
calls by parents echo off in a distance
as swimming trunks
stay wet, dripping bodies run home
late through neighbor’s
backyards
little Tommy thinking it can't be time
to take a
bath, just a waste of water for a
little gunk left
behind
my ears, surely parents to believe
Rover ate my homework
and send me straight to bed
meanwhile Sally worries
about old
Mr McElroy's yard with a bear of a
guard barking and
carrying on, "Hoot" goes the owl,
now escalating the
pace
all of us children now wishing
we were already home
as the roar of thunder from a
distant storm rolls
in
safely being tucked in under
the covers with
Mommy and Daddy in the next
room...

This really captures the simplicity and the delight of children at play in a familiar landscape. The neighbor's name reference lends it authenticity. This is good stuff.

that my friend John had, omgawsh I thought I
was going to take flight with it!!
This is a precious poem, full of memories of childhood summers.
The pic you chose is a great illustration of the poem.
Each line brings me smiles and remembrances.
Oh yes indeed, this is most assuredly small town summertime with dust devils, laughing children and cold, cold iced tea. How your words bring those memories back to me. I do have some pleasant memories.

Major League ballplayer Justin Moore is kidnapped from his own ballpark and transported to a foreign land. It might take high-level international negotiations to free him. Or maybe he will take matters into his own hands.
