PURPOSE

The night turned a cold black
As I wandered down the deserted track
For me there was no going back
To do so, would be to fail

I stumbled on some broken piece
And fell, and harmed myself
In an innocuous way, but
Rose again, to scramble on

In the pure black my purpose shone
Like a beacon to the wandering ship
I could not discern its features
Only aware of its presence

Many more times I fell
But rose again, until
I nearly reached my goal
To fall a final time

But was I wrong to have tried
Even though, in the process
I died
