Permanent Damage

The house is saturated with her scent,
In he walked, like his feet were in cement.
It's a shame, she's been gone less than a day,
He wonders if he should kneel down and pray.

He closed the door and forgot what to do,

Maybe take off his suit for it was new.
The air became heavy and wet with tears,
He went to the kitchen, retrieved a beer.

Emptiness throbs in his heart like a stone,
He put his face inside his hands and groaned.
Her smell and the awful odor of death,
Combined with each other and took his breath.

The essence of her will soon fade away,

Except in his heart which has turned to clay.
The old house will never be like it was,
It has lost its soul, its on houseapause.

He knows she is gone and will not come back,

That will make this home nothing but a shack.
How can a man live thru such awful pain,
And go about his life and not complain?

Back to the fridge, another beer, sat down,

This time he brought back a bottle of Crown.
His wife walked in and said, "You're in a fog,
"Yes you loved her, but she was just a dog."

I feel your sorrow...I truly do, Jerry. I miss hearing about her antics and your walks together. She was in your heart.

Love ya!

Dogs are a man's best friend, and a woman's too. I miss my dog dearly. She died of old age at 15. I had to put her to sleep. the only animal that loves you unconditionally. She never fetched me slippers. but she loved to cuddle. Thanks for the gentle poem, have a wonderful day. xo

Hahaha!!! For some reason, I burst out in laughter when I read it down to the last line although I know a dog is also a reason for our grieve.

Oh so good. A tear-jerker and excellently written.

Gawd damn, dawg! You ruined a perfectly good tearjerker poem with a twist!

But then, we both remember vividly when our little ones died.

Certainly quetching about these kinds of experiences is understandable, (I feel) and even sometimes necessary to sort through the clutter of thoughts and feelings that result. Speaking personally: sometimes we can make peace with loss, sometimes it haunts us. Thankfully people with gifts can write about it (as you have here) and share what they've gone through with those of us who have gone through similar things. Your honesty, Jerry, (IMO) is one of your best traits. Peace... r

Very touching, and well written. Nice twist in the ending.

Never "just" a dog - A canine friend is a friend like no other.
