tho it took awhile
I'm slower than others I guess
still
I've discovered
life, which has become
solitude more or less
since Dottie has gone on
life uprooted
n'er to be the same again
new town
new neighbors, et al
I repeat
tho it took me awhile
life has opened its arms to me
not to say
all is good
my goodness, no it isn't
but
the last years
have opened my eyes
cleaned out my ears
wiped the debris of forty years of wandering
from my soul
authentic physical wandering
and
mentally sidestepping through life's splendor
ah, now I get it
now that life is almost over
I get it
better-late-than-never
true , yes it is true
this is not about whining that I wasted
my youth
and a big part of my adulthood
no
this is about celebration
of my eyes being opened
my ears hearing what it never heard before
and all that debris?
oh, it’s still there
piled up alongside the road of life
as it should be
n'er to cause me pain
Age brings wisdom and peace, and the best we can hope for is to leave this world with the right regrets. I know I'm not near as brave as I used to be. I just call it being smarter.
I guess, speaking for myself, that no matter who tries to teach you lessons in this life, you won't really understand it until you go through it on your own. As you mentioned: "piled up alongside the road of life" Thankfully old debris is alongside the road and not blocking it. Pellucid and honest, Jerry. Well done. Peace... r
A further collection of poems, many from years in the Middle East, but also the California San Francisco and Central Coast areas (Santa Cruz, Carmel, Big Sur, Berkeley, etc.).
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
Love ya!
