Yes, I know I have posted this before, but it is just one of those poems that begs the spotlight one . . . more . . . time.
Ah, yes, the years have slid on by, and the Class of Fifty-Seven Have each gone our separate ways, When I think of it I just sigh.
I think back to Kathryn Higgins Remembering from yesteryear, The old gang has grown older now, Heck, makes me want to go gigging.
John Page, Red Whitney died too soon Wonder what they'd done with their life, If fate had not intervened, Why they might have walked on the moon.
Nancy Carroll I remember. A quiet and very nice soul, Amid some of our more loud-mouths, Hardly heard a peep out of her.
Martha, Marilyn and Mitzi, Fell in love with 'em in first grade, Called them (secretly) my three "M's", Wrote their names where no one could see. Rodney Stocks, he was one smart guy,| Hardly cracked a book to study, He didn't need to, he was sharp, His intellect was rather high.
Lu seemed to always have a smile, Victor and I palled around some, Charles McMahen went on to great thingsa
Though I've not gone to great acclaim,
My appearance has never changed
I don't remember high school so fondly. A school of girls. Not for me. And when I meet them on the street, some say hello, and some turn their heads. I'd rather forget them.
After reading your memoir, I'm rather surprised by the way you look back at high school so favorably when you really wanted to get out of that town. I was class of 61 and was fortunate enough to get to my 50th reunion. I remember the names of classmates quite well but found that at the 50th I had a little trouble recognizing some of them will immediately recognized me and my twin brother who was also there.
We did have a hot cheerleader by the name of Judy Higgins. A cousin? Unfortunately, I believe that high school was the high point of her life.
It would seem you have good memories from high school. It's just the opposite for me. I couldn't wait to leave those halls, and I've never attended any class reunions. I didn't care for those a-holes then, and I don't care to see any of them now.
Class of '64. I remember every classmate in my graduating class and most of the one in my junior year. We had our 50th reunion in 2014 and I still can't listen to the song Graduation Day. I have good memories of my school years. Thanks for the memories, Jerry.
I was class of 62. I marvel at the way you seem to pull those names and characteristics out of the past. I don't remember a single individual from high school, perhaps because I have lived so far away all these years. Yes, the poem does bear repeating, because it is a "memorable" one. Thanks for posting again; I don't think I saw it the first time. I wasn't writing poems in 2013 !
I have very few fond memories of High School. I was the geek with glasses who was good with wood, played classical trumpet, and lifted weights. I have certain cherished memories of one cheerleader - Deana Mausen - who embraced me for a season and then, because I was late picking her up for a date, dumped me. Honestly though... I wouldn't change anything about those HS experiences. They helped form and strengthen me, and they gave me certain inspirations that continue to this day in my pursuit of beauty. Enjoyed your thoughts, Jerry. Peace... r
You write fondly of your classmates and that is such a compassionate thing. Yes, where does the time go? My appearance??? I've got to laugh when people tell me I haven't changed! I tell them that I'd hate to think I looked like this when I was 18!!! LOL!! 'Enjoyed this write!
There's something about retrospection when one has accumulated the necessary years to invite wisdom into their scrapbook of events. You've called upon your fond memories here with acute alacrity for the past. So many reaching this stage in their life succumb to curmudgeon attitudes. Bravo for your "up" vigor for the past.
A people’s heart can be found in their poetic words. In history men and women have stood firmly upon their soapboxes and street corners, rallying the deepest beliefs of people to rise up and be heard. The poetrypages.com has offered that voice a new
