small events in life are the ones that stay with us for a life time

I remember summers so hot
staying in the back yard till ten at night,
spending your days in summers school playing,
not cause you did not pass
coming home at lunch time eating and taking a nap

I remember going to sunken meadows for the day,
Mom cooking breakfast an open BBQ pit, on the ground...
running in the sand and swinging
hopping you could walk down to the beach
before they made you eat lunch, and have to wait another hour

I remember the ground being so hot, to get to the beach
you hopped/ skipped and tried to stay on the grass
wishing you remembered to being something to drink
swimming down at the beach, and trying to look cute
that slow walk back to the picnic ground, your so tired
sucking on an ice pop trying to stay cool

I remember the smell of lunch on the grill
being so hungry, you can't wait to eat
mama saying, "go up to the bath house
wash the salt off you and change clothing"

I remember eating and not wanting to move after
just take a long nap in the shade, acting like
you can't hear mama say," time to load the car"
knowing you have watermelon waiting when you finish

I remember the sun setting as you ride home
tired and damp, no air conditioner in those old cars
I remember Daddy saying, "see that sun set" each time
I remember being at peace with your self and the world
