A face that I remember,
Yet one that has been,
Changed so much.
Through life itself
And experience.
A grown-up woman,
I was not expecting,
But to find my friend,
Literally from where
We had both left off.
My peer from childhood,
Following onto young ladyhood,
Of sixteen,
Where we had last seen,
Each other.
Fate had changed our course,
To different countries,
To pursue our education
And careers.
And here we stood today,
With two girls of mine,
And three kids of hers.
A shocking experience,
It was.
She used to yell my name,
And chase me throughout school,
Daring me to sit on garbage,
Like outrageous brats,
As we burped around school.
Tom-boys were we
Back then.
Grown-up mothers were we,
Today.
Composed ladies were we,
With Gucci sunglasses
And Dior handbags,
With kids and husbands to tend to.
Gone were the daring young girls,
Who had grown up together,
And here we sat
Making polite conversation,
And showing off refined manner.
Not a trace of wild behaviour
Remained.
But tamed were we,
Into Tamers
Of our very own wild kids.
