The Soldier gives unselfishly for the greater good of humanity, certainly a soldier who believes in freedom. There is a human side to war (odd as that may sound) and a political side. The soldier follows the orders of the political side because he/she believes in the human side. Freedom should be the birthright of all mankind, sadly that is not the case. You are right, "Freedom is never free" and the price paid for it is greater than anything else we have ever known. The red stripes in our flag symbolize the rivers of blood that have been shed by those who so believed in freedom that they gave their all in defense of it. Thank you for this poem, Steven, I somehow feel that Erin may have misunderstood the direction you were taking with this, or perhaps I am the one who did not understand your intentions. I agree that too many want the benefits that only a few are willing to stand up for.

Though Erin is my friend, I disagree with her comments on "too few were willing". It is WILL which makes the real difference betwen freedom and slavery. This piece might could use a bit of grammatical "polish", but rings very true for such as me and those I knew...
To me, R. Steven, you started out strong, then became peavish, as in 'too few were willing', maybe, 'too few were able' would sound more reality-given, since faith, compromised by the indivdual thoughts of six billion people, is, and especially was, perspectively driven. You don't want to ram religion down anyone's throat, it is conscriptive to freedom...

This is a book of free verse poetry that addresses the seven main tests in life and offers some sensible solutions to passing those tests with minimal discomfort.
